The children at our Before and After School club at Lakeview took part in a therapeutic play activity using a potato last week. The staff asked the children to see if they could push a straw into a potato knowing that this would be a difficult task. After the children tried and found that it couldn’t be done a member of staff then tried to do it. Without showing the children that the straw was bent the staff member was able to push the straw into the potato. The children were then given chance and time to try and work out how the staff member was able to push the straw into the potato.
This is used as a therapeutic play activity for children as it enables them to use their fine motor skills and their brains to think of ways to achieve the goal. Through discussion and practice the children were able to work out how to push the straw into the potato.
This was a fun and enjoyable session for the children and they were so thrilled when they succeeded. It was an activity that got the whole group talking and trying to problem solve together,
